Correspondence, 1847-90, of various members of this family, particularly Jonas Southard, Elizabeth Southard, John B. Southard, Albertine G. Southard, and Margaret Southard Hollister, including: letters, 1849-50, from Margaret Southard Hollister and her husband Horatio Gates Hollister to the family in Rexford Flats describing their life in Oxford, Michigan; large group of letters, 1862-65, from John B. Southard to Albertine G. Southard, his sister at home, while serving with the 49th N.Y.S. Vols. in Virginia - he describes the tedium of camp life, the battles of Fredericksburg, Rappahannock Station, Spotsylvania Court House, and Petersburg, and he comments upon the condition of negroes at this time. His letters also contain many derisive references to Copperheads.
